The project has developed wireless access technologies for the aircraft cabin, which will enable passengers to use several different technologies, including UMTS, Bluetooth, and W-LAN.

The infrastructure includes:
  • the cabin segment with several wireless access segments
  • a satellite segment for connection to the terrestrial telecom networks
  • an aircom service provider segment

A demonstration campaign was carried out in commercial long-haul aircraft (Airbus A340) via a GEO satellite link.

TriaGnoSys was responsible for the WP 3200 Satellite Segment Roadmap. The aggregate cabin traffic was calculated using a multi-service model for multimedia services. Potential satellites were selected. The asymmetric bandwidth demand in forward and return link directions was considered, taking a combination of several satellite providers into account.
